This Month’s Presenting Communities

Los Portales

Los Portales is an intentional community that was founded in 1984 in the province of Seville, Spain. The community practices innovative ways of life in different areas including organic agriculture, holistic education, deep psychology, empowering/power sharing systems of governance, conflict resolution, natural medicines, art, clean energies, an economy based on sharing, and above all, the empowerment of each individual, continually advancing towards greater sustainability and self-sufficiency. There is an urban extension of Los Portales in Madrid called Crealliance, whose aim is to promote the creation of alliances between different areas of expertise and to build bridges between people from different backgrounds through sharing information, training and networking.

Sunnyside Village Cohousing

Sunnyside Village Cohousing is forming a multigenerational community just north of Seattle, Washington. They are a cohousing community with a strong focus on their organic garden. Their intent is to produce some of what they eat on the site in their very large organic community garden, orchard and berry patch, or from nearby farms. They will live in 32 small (1000-1200 sf) cottages and share ownership in a large (3000 sf) Common House for community activities and some shared meals. Members own their home and also the lot it is built on.

PDX Commons Cohousing

PDX Commons is an intentional community of individuals dedicated to making the most of their last third of life together. In early 2013, five people came together to start discussing the possibility of an adult cohousing project in Portland. All five were motivated by a desire to have the last chapter of their lives be very different from the experience of their parents, who lived in increasing isolation, with a lack of social support and stimulation. Their condominium combines private homes with many shared spaces for socializing, meals, and community business meetings. They share a common ethic of inclusion, cooperation and mutual accountability.

Loved by Community Builders

What a beautiful gift to our intentional community builders and leaders! FIC’s programs provide a way for thinking and concerned people to collaborate for solutions to our multitude of global crises. Thank you FIC! – Terri Garcia

I am constantly impressed by the down-to-earth practicality of the FIC workshops combined with the philosophical questions that are so vital for us to explore. I’m grateful for the excellent planning and delivery of the workshops by skilled and inclusive presenters, who create a space that is both welcoming and invites participants to challenge existing ideas and world views. Well done and thank you FIC. – Claire Ogden
