Red Earth Farms is a community of homesteads on autonomous leaseholds dedicated to developing sustainable lifestyle choices. Our guiding principle is, “Love the land; love your neighbors.” We enjoy our close relationship with the planet that sustains us. In our actions we endeavor to do to others as we would have them do to us. This means a support for cooperative projects and gift culture. It also means we respect the diversity among us. We hope this freedom of implementation will result in a number of different models of sustainable systems. Though we encourage cooperation, it is rarely obligatory. Individuals, families, and income-sharing communities make decisions about their own leasehold, and everyone can participate in decisions affecting the wider Red Earth Farms community. The issues upon which we seek full community agreement are few. Many of our members are aiming to generate a high percentage of our own food, as well as shelter, fuel, clothing, tools, and other essentials. Nonviolence, permaculture, feminism, independence, and our personal spiritual paths are important to us. We are located on 76 acres of rolling hills, with six ponds, several wooded areas, and a small creek. We are on a gravel road less than a mile from Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage and about three miles from Sandhill Farm. We have neighborly relationships with these communities; we share gardening tips, potluck dinners, frisbee games, and other social gatherings. We are open to visitors and we welcome individuals, families, and those of nontraditional lifestyles. We have some availability for new incoming members and are particularly interested in self-motivated folks with a pioneering spirit and a desire to homestead in a community of like-minded neighbors.
