It Takes A Village
Sprung from the dream of a single parent longing for more support, connection and access to safe and affordable housing on a single income. After exploring all of the local cohousing options in/around Denver, and being priced out of attaining traditional cohousing ownership (and its amenities), yet over the limit for a subsidized unit – the idea to to create a micro community with the goal of becoming a shared equity cooperative was born. Intrinsic to this community is that it is inclusive of families, provides vital mutual support needed outside of the nuclear family, and makes the amenities of homeownership (yard for pets and kids, garden space, room to spread out inside and out as kid get older) accessible to those who may not otherwise be able to attain them independently.
Purpose
We are a family-friendly collective housing model for those who believe we are stronger together. Interdependence and connection are prioritized for residents, with shared resources and community agreements providing a guiding framework. Multiple separate living spaces provide privacy and can support a range of household make-ups, balancing autonomy and privacy with connection and mutual aid. Single parents are encouraged, and all identities are welcome. Options to rent and/or invest, and earn shared equity over time.
Principles
Shared Community: Relationships and intentional connection are centered. Community agreements are developed by residents to ensure shared commitment, trust and accountability in how we support each other, care for the property, and balance privacy with connection.
Shared Equity: Wealth building for residents is afforded through an opportunity to earn a portion of equity in the home over time (exact model in development). Rather than traditional rent, a collective investment model allows for the costs and benefits of homeownership to be shared.Â
Shared Resources: To lessen individual costs and environmental impact, property tools and assets are shared for common use. Shared tools, yard, and garden space provide common amenities without the burden of individual investment and upkeep.
Shared Vision:Â By changing the narrative of the American Dream to elevate cooperative models of living, we can create more supportive, connected communities where individuals and families thrive. Cooperatives can also provide access to wealth building for more people, especially single parents.
