Lightning in a Bottle, the annual arts, music, and yoga festival in Southern California, announced its 2016 theme and workshop leaders. According to Grateful Web, “The Village’s 2016 theme, Tree of Life, will focus on re-integrating humanity into right relationship with our ecosystem…. The Village will give attendees a unique opportunity to learn by doing, develop hands on skills and discover what it takes to create and sustain a living Village together as a community.”

Workshop topics include permaculture, natural medicine, sacred music, and more. Mark Lakeman, founder of the Village Building Convergence in Portland, OR, will participate in a panel discussion on building resilient communities. Erik Ohlsen of Permaculture Artisans, and Esperide Ananas, of the Italian eco-community Damanhur, will also offer workshops.

The event takes place on Memorial Day Weekend (May 25 – 30) in Bradley, CA. In addition to sustainability workshops, it includes performances by musical acts such as Grimes and Four Tet, hands-on cooking lessons, yoga classes, and more.

I’m not a big fan of the word “inclusion”. As someone raised by scientists and fascinated with geology, it always makes me think of amber with a water bubble, or a bug, or tiny piece of wood caught in it; frozen in time. It is beautiful, but it is beauty that comes from emphasizing t…

Another cohousing community is not big news these days but this article in Delaware Online had an interesting twist, drawing the connection to Delaware’s historical Arden Villages. The three villages of Arden, Ardentown, and Ardencroft were founded in the early 1900s based on Henry George’s single-t…

Eight years ago, when I moved out to the West Coast for the first time, I wasn’t yet aware of the intentional community movement. I’d always imagined living collectively, but it wasn’t until I learned about Black Bear Ranch – through a documentary called “Commune” – that I realized communities like …

When you hear about life in Los Angeles, you probably think about traffic, smog, and sprawling suburbs. But LA has a thriving network of intentional communities, many of which exist just under the radar of activity in neighborhoods like Silverlake, Mar Vista, and Koreatown. I spent several years …
