Jan Martin Bang

Jan, a Fellow of the Findhorn Foundation, was born in Norway and grew up in England where he was active in the Cooperative and Trade Union Movements in the 70’s. He moved to Israel in 1984 and was a kibbutz member for 16 years. Since 1993, he has worked on environmental projects within the Kibbutz Movement. This took Jan on extensive travels within the region, teaching Permaculture courses and visiting ecovillage type projects in Egypt, Turkey, Cyprus and the Palestinian areas.

Jan moved to Solborg Camphill Village in Norway in the year 2000 with his family, and worked on educational projects with people with special needs, and with administration of the Camphill Charitable Trust in Norway. He also started and edited the Norwegian Camphill quarterly magazine, “Landsbyliv” (Village Life) for its first 11 years.

Jan has worked with the Global Ecovillage Network since it was established in 1995, first as a contact person in Israel, later as a contributor to the book “Ecovillage Living”, published in 2002. He has written many articles for commune, community and ecological periodicals over the last three decades, and contributed papers to international conferences on community and ecological issues.

In 2006, Jan gained his Diploma in Permaculture from the Nordic Permaculture Institute based on his work in education and community building. He has been active in the Norwegian Permaculture movement since 2001, as a member of the Board, and as Chair. Jan has also been an active member of the Norwegian Ecovillage movement, as Board member and sometime Chair of the Kilden Charitable Trust. Jan is currently on the Board of the newly founded Norwegian Permaculture Diploma Guild, and has held dozens of Permaculture Foundation Courses (PDC) in several countries, including Norway, Israel, Scotland, Latvia, Iceland and Spitzbergen.

He has been connected to the International Communal Studies Association (ICSA) since its founding conference in 1985, and in 2010 was elected Chair of the Association.
