A wise person once told me, “At every level of the nested hierarchy of life, we can look down for function and up for purpose.”

For example, as individuals, our hearts, kidneys, and other organs are functionary to us. We are their purpose. Going deeper, our organs have functionary tissues, cells, organelles and so on, all the way down.

Looking up from ourselves then, the question becomes, “What are we functionary of? What is our purpose?” The answer seems obvious — community! And beyond that, a community of communities! And so on, all the way up.

This is why we’re so excited to bring together the FIC and my 25+ year background with the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN). Energizing the North American node of GEN will allow the FIC to simultaneously focus more on engagement and gatherings with communities in the U.S. and Canada and also expand our connections to communities and resources in Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Oceania and Asia.
