It’s possible we are doing this backwards. We have an amazing piece of land assembled with 7-14 housing units already on it. It’s on 450′ of Cross Lake shoreline, walking distance to dozens of shops & restaurants, there is a great spot for a shared garden and community room. We don’t live there yet, but in 2030 (after our kids graduate from high school) we plan to make it our home and hope to share it with cool people who dig the idea sharing a weekly vegan meal together, using the common room for card tournaments, movie nights, or morning yoga. The long term goal is to create a Planned Unit Development or PUD either as an HOA or a Coop so we can sell the existing townhomes and single family homes while maintaining a common beach area and community room. Until then all the properties are leased separately. We furnish the units to make it easy to sample life there.
The focus can be whatever community members would like to focus on. I’m a vegan (my husband isn’t), I like yoga, I fantasize about composting, garden fresh tomatoes, and an easy social life for my otherwise introverted tendencies – so those are the things I’d bring to the table. My husband is handy building things, he loves boating and being on the water, he enjoys action movies, Vikings football, and thinks I’m crazy for envisioning this community. But he’s game. He likes my cooking. I love him and he loves me back. :)
