It’s incredibly difficult to balance living in a capitalism while trying to be as green as possible. There are so many new (and old) technologies in the world that we don’t take advantage of because they aren’t considered profitable or traditional enough. And those among us that do have the money and access typically create elitist communities where everyday people are priced right out unless they tried to sell their souls to a bank for a six figure loan. Even with many Intentional Communities (IC) they require a significant capital investment to join, bringing us back to treating Green building and living as a luxury most simply can’t afford. It shouldn’t be this way. As always, we need to be the change we want to see in the world. That means trying to to work with the tools available to us in this awful system. My idea to make Green Living more accessible is to simply begin a Cooperative, meaning everyone would be paid the exact same salary and benefits regardless of their role, that creates Geodesic Dome Kits. It sounds silly to present yet more capitalism as some sort of answer to our current tyrannical system, but this is the most viable way forward that I have come up with. Business’s are welcomed by small towns and communities in a way that regular IC’s simply aren’t. We could much more easily receive funding for our endeavors and cooperation with local government and perhaps even lab access at local universities. Which would be key to ensuring the materials are truly as green as we can get them to be. All of this, ever so incidentally, meaning that we could have access to all we need to create a Green IC where every member of the Co-op would naturally have access to a Geodesic Dome Kit of their very own. Housing being a human right and all. I’m currently in a research phase, and while I think my ideas are feasible there’s no denying that things would be moving much faster with more hands on deck. I would also welcome connecting with people who share my interest in Green Building and if I’m particularly fortunate, something like expertise in any related field. I look forward to hearing from those interested, especially if they are BIPOC or Queer as I am both.
Making Green Living and Building as accessible as possible for ourselves and neighboring communities. Pushing the agenda that housing is a human right and using renewable resources to the best of our ability, promoting this practice wherever able.
